SAG Predictions

More predictions – this one is actually important to how the Academy will be shaping their nominations this year (for acting, obviously) so yeah, lets do this *cue enthusiasm*

The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Up in the Air

Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart
George Clooney – Up in the Air
Colin Firth – A Single Man
Morgan Freeman – Invictus
Jeremy Renner – The Hurt Locker

Abbie Cornish – Bright Star
Helen Mirren – The Last Station
Carey Mulligan – An Education
Gabourey Sidibe – Precious
Meryl Streep – Julie and Julia

Woody Harrelson – The Messenger
Christian McKay – Me and Orson Welles
Alfred Molina – An Education
Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz – Inglourious Basterds

Marion Cotillard – Public Enemies
Vera Farmiga – Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick – Up in the Air
Samantha Morton – The Messenger
Mo’Nique – Precious

There’s two things to note (well, possibly a third). The first is that The Weinstein Company sent out the Nine screeners late, meaning a lot of members of SAG won’t have seen it by the time they submitted their picks. Does this mean you should count everyone out? No, but I didn’t find anyone from that cast’s chances to be anything more than bordering on the fifth spot. On top of this, Marion Cotillard was voted on in lead for her role in Nine for SAG. SAG never goes against the designated category campaigned for — Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed for example — which makes her chances at snagging a nod here even less likely. The third (and most important to me) is that Christian McKay’s category placement is weary. Was he considered in lead? Apparently some said he was, but it seems the majority think he was being campaigned in supporting (which seems most likely considering that’s where just about everyone has been noticing him in). If he’s campaigned lead, I think that strips away any hope he has for a SAG bump in momentum. For arbitrary reasons, if it’s revealed he was placed lead for the SAGs, I’ll say my other pick to be nominated would be Matt Damon for Invictus.
