My Thoughts on the Winners:

Best Picture - I am so glad The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford won this award. It’s one of the best films of the year, by far, and the critical acclaim it was getting was fairly positive but mixed. So alike everyone else, I safely assumed it’s chances were dead. Hopefully it keeps winning these small awards. Even if it only wins one or two more, I’ll be very content with that.

Best Actor in a Leading Role - It looks like Day-Lewis has his work cut out for him this year. Clooney seems to be as held in as high of a regard as Day-Lewis. The thing is, with Clooney’s win comes no other wins for the film. So it gets me to thinking that critics really think Clooney is good. This opposed to my thinking that the only reason Day Lewis has most of his wins, are because people who love There Will Be Blood. - or even just Daniel in general - are voting for him.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - After reflecting on Christie’s performance, I think it’s the third best choice a critic group could choose. So her winning all of these awards is fine by me. I still wish that Cotillard would win as many of these precursors as Christie does. As well as Adams maybe getting one or two.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Yay! Casey for a nomination. That’s the best we can hope for as of now. Look at all the praises Bardem is getting. Anyhow, Affleck’s performance is one of the best of the year (as said by many). So this win will be very pleasant for people rooting for Affleck. Since he won the ‘big’ precursor and now a smaller one, we can only hope he gets a few more of these before the Academy Awards.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Damn it Ryan. Thanks to you we have little to no idea about what’s going on in this category. It’s either you winning or Blanchett. Who else is there? There are three spots wide open. Hopefully with the critic awards to come there’ll be more clarity.

Best Original Screenplay - A lovely screenplay by Jenkins. I really enjoy the fact she’s getting an win here and there. Her script is very well written, intelligent, funny and dramatic. One of the most well rounded scripts of the year. I really hope she gets a nomination.

Best Adapted Screenplay - A pretty intriguing choice. Polley grabbing her first screenplay win of the year. Since the last spot in the category has opened up, (due to the category switch for American Gangster) Polley could possibly get that last spot if she keeps winning. Though it looks unlikely, because The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is now in the running. Anyhow, the script was lovely. Glad to see a Canadian grab a ‘major’ award.

Best Documentary - No End in Sight. I guess it’s really just down to it and Sicko now. I thought there were more possibilities for the category, but apparently not.

Best Foreign Language Film - I think it’s now official. Call it talking prematurely, but I think after this foreign language win, it’s a pretty damn near close to a lock in Best Picture. As odd as it may sound, I believe it.
