My Thoughts on the Winners:
Best Picture - Two in a row for There Will Be Blood. I guess the fever is catching on for this acclaimed masterpiece. The Diving Bell’s runner up spot is making this film look like an overnight sensation in this category. Woot.
Best Director - Paul Thomas’ second win in a row. It looks like this will be the year he garners his first nomination in the direction category. Good for him. As for Julien; wow, just wow. This small, ‘foreign’ film has certainly picked up a lot of momentum heading out of the gates. If it keeps this pace, I can see a win for Julien.
Best Actor in a Leading Role - Daniel’s second win. From NBR until now, people have thought that Day-Lewis’ chances were fading fast. It looks like he has made a quick recovery and is headed on his ‘winning’ path again. Frank’s spot is almost guaranteed now.
Best Actress in a Leading Role - Marion Cotillard’s second win of the season. Her only major competition at the moment is Julie Christie. The runner up is my current winner. This is Anamaria Marinca in 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. LA gave this film two great mentions, and I’m ecstatic over this one. She has no chance, but the fact someone mentioned her makes me happy.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role - My favourite win of the category. Vlad Ivanov had about fifteen to twenty minutes of screen time in this film. All of it was in one scene. He dominated the screen and portrayed the role perfectly. He has almost no chance, but the thought was indeed awesome. Holbrook rakes in his first mention of the year - critic wise.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Amy Ryan… again? Damn, she looks like she’s going to win. Sadly, this category tends to disappoint me year after year, so it’s fine. I’m just glad Cate took home ‘runnerup’ here.
Best Screenplay - The Savages’ first major win. Jenkins’ script is great and I’m glad it won something. Here’s hoping to it getting a nomination at the Oscars. The runner up, ’surprisingly’, is P.T Anderson for There Will Be Blood. The more wins for him, the better.
Best Documentary - No End in Sight wins. It looks to be this years front runner. I haven’t seen it, but I hear great things. Sicko wins runner up. Yay.
Best Animated Feature - Persepolis looks to be a lock in this category, as does Ratatouille. This ties comes as no surprise.
Best New Generation - Polley’s second ‘new’ win in a row. Her chances at Best Director look shot, but I’m glad she’s getting some love.
Best Production Design - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is just racking up awards; major and technical alike. It looks to be this years ‘overall’ front runner at the Oscars. Glad to see Sweeney Todd picked up a runner up prize here.
Best Original Music - I’ve heard the score by Jonny Greenwood and it’s pretty damn good. Doesn’t make my nominations, but it’s certainly not the worst choice one could make.
