My Thoughts on the Winners:

Best Picture - The first significant buzz There Will Be Blood has recieved. It seemed as if only Day-Lewis would be nominated. Now that seems like a distant past. If the film can muster up some more wins like this, it’ll get a Best Picture nomination. As for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, it’s buzz is off the radar. It looks to be the surprise hit of the season.

Best Director - Paul Thomas’ first win of the season. Many think he will not be nominated because his better efforts were snubbed. If this film appeals, I can see it happening.

Best Actor in a Leading Role - Daniel’s first win. This could either be a fluke or the spark to something excellent. I’m skeptical he’s a lock at this point. One or two more wins would make me think otherwise, though.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Julie Christie seems to have solidified a spot in the lead actress lineup this year with her critic award wins. NBR was the biggest; this just shows that wasn’t a ’sympathy’ win.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Who saw Bardem’s win coming? Certainly not I…

Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Cate Blanchett! Her first critic win of the year. Hope she wins a lot more. Her performance is much, much better than Ryan’s.

Best Screenplay - An original choice indeed. Could this start up The Darjeeling Limited’s chances at a possible nomination? Doubtful, but one could hope.

Best Documentary - Michael Moore’s first documentary win of the year. Definitely surprising. I only hope he gets a well deserved nomination.

Best Foreign Feature - To clear some confusion, the reason why The Lives of Others can win this category again is because it had it’s American release this year. Although it did win the Academy Award, it is still a 2007 by American rules. To go on about Persepolis’ win. I am so glad it won. It’s the first ‘eligible’ film to win in this category. This may give us an idea of it’s Foreign Language chances.

Best New Director - An interesting choice. I guess they decided to give someone other than Affleck the win. I cannot comment for I haven’t seen the film yet, but I’m sure it’s well deserved.

Breakthrough Performance - While Page was good, I’d certainly give a handful of people this award over her. Though she fails to make my top ten, she was still great. If this is a sign of things to come, lets hope she gets a nomination.

Best Ensemble Cast - Again with the Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead? Well, there are worse choices out there. Glad to see Hawke and Hoffman are getting at least some recognition.

Best Original Music - I’ve heard the score by Jonny Greenwood and it’s pretty damn good. Doesn’t make my nominations, but it’s certainly not the worst choice one could make.
