My Thoughts on the Winners:
Best Picture - Well, it’s nice to see There Will Be Blood picking up at least a few more critics awards before the Golden Globes. Lately it’s been all about No Country for Old Men. I still think this film’s chances are over, but you never know.
Best Director - It looks like this critics award really jumped on the There Will Be Blood bandwagon. I guess it’s logical that a film win Best Director if it wins Best Picture, but I don’t know. Are people really thinking P.T. Anderson will get a nomination this year? One could only hope.
Best Actor in a Leading Role - It really looks like Daniel Day-Lewis has pulled away from the rest of the competitio, critic wise. There was skepticism over Clooney’s big win, followed by a few other smaller ones. Right now, it looks like everything is back in it’s natural order.
Best Actress in a Leading Role - Ellen Page is really getting more critics awards. It started off with none. Then it progressed into a couple of ‘newcomer of the year’ awards. Now she’s in full throttle as a major contender; critic-wise. I cannot say I’m angry at her winning - for it’s much more interesting with a three person race, rather than a two person race - but she doesn’t make my personal top ten.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role - OK. We get it. Javier Bardem is going to win. I really hope other critics start to be more amusing with their picks, than just choosing the generic choice.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Oooh, an interesting choice! Even though I really did not like the performance, it’s nice to see critics mixing it up a little in this already sturdy category.
Best Cinematography - Elswit’s work on this film is getting a lot of critic attention. I better not be underwhelmed by the photography in this film. It’s being praised almost as much as Children of Men’s last year.
Best Original Screenplay - And the Cody count continues. She is in first position in my eyes, right now.
Best Adapted Screenplay - I’m very surprised There Will Be Blood didn’t take this category as well - seeing as how Austin clearly loved the film. I guess this shows how much critics appreciate the writing of No Country for Old Men. That’s gotta mean something.
Best Documentary - One of the most entertaining documentaries I’ve ever seen. A fun flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously - and in doing so, creates one of the most pleasant and rage building films of the year. Such a fun movie.
Best Foreign Language Film - Yet again, a film that isn’t eligible for the category wins. At least it was an interesting choice. A film eligible for the category last year, which didn’t make the cut, wins the following year? Anyways, the film is great if you haven’t seen it.
Best First Film - Man, oh man. I really, really hope that these ‘first director’ and ‘first film’ awards give Affleck enough attention to snatch a ‘Best Director’ spot.
Breakthrough Performer - It’s nice to see Michael Cera win a few of these awards, after he was completely snubbed for the majority portion of these critics awards. Funny, funny guy. I kind of assumed since he was on a huge TV show, he’d be ineligible, though.
Best Animated Feature - How… obvious.
Austin Film Award - It’s nice to see Grindhouse get any recognition. The most fun I’ve had at a theater in my life. Tons of fun, lots of laughs, well written… I could go on. Such a funtastic flick from two of the coolest directors working.
Best Original Score - There Will Be Blood really swept up the awards in this one. Sadly, I find the score to be overrated already, and not deserving of so many wins. Atonement, Cassandra’s Dream, Sleuth, as well as many other films have better scoring. I wish Greenwood wouldn’t hog this category.
