My analysis on these awards.
Best Picture - I’m very content with the reception my favourite film of the year is receiving. It’s safe to say - bar an Atonement outbreak - that this film has the win locked. After critics were weary of the film at a screening, I was worried it wouldn’t be loved. I’m glad it was just a little knick in it’s path to success.
Best Director - Cool. I think the Coen’s are going to ride the love of No Country for Old Men to their first Best Director win. I’d absolutely love that. It’s their best work since… ever!
Best Actor in a Leading Role - Never count Clooney out. He seems to be a lock for a nomination and Day Lewis’ only competition. Even though I found the performance to be only ‘good’, him winning is exciting. It makes the ‘fairly’ unpredictable category more hectic. Also with this win, it shows that the prior win at NBR was no fluke.
Best Actress in a Leading Role - Julie Christie is really being praised with critics here. Her dominating, train-like force in this category is frightful. I only hope that Cotillard can muster up some more wins to catch up to Julie. Otherwise, I can see the Oscar going to Christie, easily.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Shocker…
Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Shocker… Well, at least Washington gave her the win for Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead as well as Gone Baby Gone. This category is pretty empty. The winners are of two. It’s very sad to watch. I hope one critic group decides to spice things up.
Best Art Direction - Sweeney Todd has always looked like it would dominate technically. This win just reassures me that it will get a nomination in this category.
Best Original Screenplay - I love this win. Cody’s screenplay is my favourite of the year. I’m very glad to see she’s getting recognition. After her tie at NBR, she hadn’t won any other awards until now. I’m glad others find her script to be as lovely as I did.
Best Adapted Screenplay - An interesting choice. I’m sure the script is well written and is as satirical as hell. Only time will tell if this choice was ‘what triggered it all’ or if this win is “A pointless win”. I really hope for the best, because the film does look very promising. Also, good job for Sorkin. It’s his first win of the year.
Best Documentary - I’m glad Moore is going to get another nomination. As arrogant as some may find him, I think the idea of him being nominated is just perfect. Not only does it please me, but if he wins, he should have a very interesting speech in store.
Best Foreign Language Film - Well, with the foreign wins piling up, I can imagine that the film will make a break for Best Picture. I also believe it will achieve it’s ‘goal’. Just a feeling that a film that dominates a category like this, makes me feel such a way.
Breakthrough Performance - Good for Page. Though I find her performance to be a tad overrated, the wins she’s been getting are really preping her for her inevitable Oscar nomination. Since only two actress have won anything in the “Best Actress” category, I assume Page’s Breakthrough wins will help her get thrown into the race.
